Midjourney shows new AI tool Patchwork: What it can do and how you can try it out

Midjourney is primarily known for its AI-generated images. But now the people behind the programme want to go one step further. With Patchwork, they are launching a worldbuilding tool for creative minds.

The makers of Midjourney have announced a new tool in an extensive livestream. It's called Patchwork and is primarily aimed at authors, directors and game designers - but also anyone who enjoys creating new worlds. But how does this work with Midjourney's new Patchwork tool?

Midjourney: So erstellt ihr ganze Welten in Patchwork

Patchwork is basically a blank page at first. You can fill this page with content using several AI tools on the side. For example, you can create characters, events, locations, factions or special objects for a world or story. You can also decide whether Patchwork - or Midjourney - should create suitable texts or images for the selected tools.

In the example of the Midjourney creators, a page was first created for a story about a time-travelling jazz band. Based on the specifications, which consisted of this prompt and some graphic templates, Patchwork directly created the first concept images for the world to capture its mood. From there, the creators first created a protagonist for the story.

The AI has created the name as well as the biography and skills of the character. The protagonist is called Marcus, is 48 years old and is a virtuoso on the saxophone. However, according to Patchwork, this skill also means that his sense of perfection clashes with the opinions of the other band members. Based on this description, the AI can also create a concept image of Marcus and use the previously selected styles for the generation.

In this way, more and more characters, locations and objects can be created with the help of the AI, which can slowly be put together to form a story. You use prompts to determine the direction in which the world develops. For example, you can create a location for Marcus and his bandmates where they encounter the antagonist for the first time, suffer a setback due to an event or get their skills for the first time thanks to a special object.

Another special feature of Patchwork is that you can easily link several worlds together using portals. This means that if the world of the jazz band is your main page, you can create portals to other subpages. You could then combine all the locations on this page - or create completely different worlds for the time-travelling jazz musicians to visit.

You can already access Patchwork now

With Patchwork, you don't have to work on the worlds alone. You can also share your pages with other users and drive your ideas forward collaboratively. Patchwork will display changes in real time and each individual world can be edited by up to 100 users simultaneously. However, there are a few requirements to be able to use Patchwork.

Firstly, all users need a Midjourney account with an active subscription. You will also need to log in to the Patchwork website with a Google account. If you have only used a Discord account to use Midjourney's image generation, you will need to connect your Discord account to your Google account. This is possible via the Midjourney profile settings.

In future, it will also be possible to at least view worlds created without an account. Editing will still require a Midjourney account. Those responsible could also imagine that Patchwork will one day even be able to create 3D environments with the further development of Midjourney in order to visualise worlds even better. However, this step is still years away.
